What You Don’t Think About When Your Business Moves…
A few years ago, Nu expression made a big move across the street from our previous location. It doesn’t sound like a big move, but it really is. Anytime your business changes physical locations, you have to prepare your customers in many ways. You can’t depend on every customer checking your website or Facebook page. And you can’t depend on every customer coming to your current location and seeing a sign before you plan to move. From experience, we know how important it is to prepare your clients for a big move using many mediums to reach everyone.
A lot of times people think putting a sign on their business’ door a month, or even just a few weeks, prior to a move is sufficient. And maybe you have a handful of regular clients who visit your business at least once a month, if not many more times, but the majority of your current clients and all of your potential clients may not visit your physical location in that short time period you have a sign on your door supposedly alerting everyone you’re moving to a new location.
Then, when those current clients return to your old location, or even new clients visit for the first time, they will see that you are no longer at that location and assume you’re closed. Then they will move on to another business in your industry.
What you should think about when your business moves…
Not everyone follows your Facebook page and not everyone comes to your physical location often. The most important takeaway from this is: You need to post signs, publish status updates and blog posts, and reach out on other social networks to reach all of your clients. And you should begin doing this long before your big move.
You need to have your new business stationery and marketing materials printed before the move. You don’t want to use business cards with your old address on them! And if you have them printed and ready before you move, then you are prepared to give out an accurate business card at a networking event the day after your business opens at a new location. Some people don’t even think about the fact that all of this will change, but you will need new business cards, letterhead (if it includes your business address), business envelopes, brochures, flyers, rack cards, etc. Anything and everything with your old address on it HAS to change. Otherwise you send customers to the wrong place and they will go to your competition.
You also have to update all of your information online. Don’t forget to update your Google Business Page, your website, all your social networks, Yelp, and other online pages with your new address. The most important is your Google Business Page because the information on that page is what fills in the information on your Google Local search engine result. And that is how most of your new customers will find your business. Since they have not worked with your company, they’re not loyal to you. So if you send them to the wrong location because you didn’t update this information, they will go to someone else.
