Meet the Print Team – Craig
Meet our Director of Print & Design
What sparked your passion for graphic design?
I’ve always been creative and enjoyed drawing and building. I embraced the idea of taking my talents to help other succeed through design.
How long have you been a graphic designer?
I have been a graphic designer for over 15 years.
What is your favorite print product to design?
My favorite print product to design is a brand identity package (logo/branding, business card, letterhead, envelope, etc).
Do you have formal training in print or graphic design? If so, where did you go to school?
For my Bachelor in Visual Communication I attended Ferris State University.
What is your favorite part about working as a graphic designer?
My favorite part about working as a graphic designer is to see an idea or concept, and build it into something tangible.
On a perfectly ideal day, what would you be designing?
On a perfect day I would be creating illustrated designs, such as icons or illustrations.
What were your original plans after graduating and how did you end up at Nu?
My original plan after graduation was to find a graphic design position in the Grand Rapids or Lansing area in Michigan. Not finding a right fit, I started looking for a climate and geographical change, I was fortunate to have my Mom’s family living in North Carolina. Visiting annually, I’ve always enjoyed the area and was excited about the new opportunities. About a year after I moved, I began working for Sarah Faircloth at Le Print Express, designing and printing. Eventually, Le Print Express would evolve into Nu expression!
Is there a specific project you’ve worked on at Nu that you were really passionate about? Tell us about it!
One of the projects that I was passionate about involved creating a brand-new identity (logo, stationery, etc) for a local dental practice. The client had a great vision of the style and feel of the practice, and trusted our expertise to make it a reality. It has been great to build a strong relationship where they can trust us whenever they need something designed/printed and know it will be consistent with the brand.
Are you partial to printing or graphic design? Or are you somewhere in the middle?
I would say I am somewhere in the middle, but leaning towards graphic design. I enjoy, “creating something out of nothing”. Such as taking a client’s idea and making something tangible. I do enjoy working with my hands, so being able to work in production/printing can provide a mental break from design. It also allows me to see projects from concept to production which is a rewarding feeling.
What is or has been your biggest design challenge?
The biggest design challenge is trying to understand what the client has envisioned in their head and translate it to reality.
Come by Nu expression today to discuss your print and graphic design needs with Craig!
