Wedding Cake Trends of 2016
If you’ve read my bio on the Nu expression website then you know that I am a cake baker and decorator on the weekends. I’ve been decorating cakes for 7 years and the trends continue to change each and every year.
A wedding cake needs to follow the theme of your wedding and it gives that final touch to your big day. There is ALWAYS going to be the traditional white on white wedding cake but check out these unique trends that are the most popular in 2016!
THE NAKED CAKE
The naked cake is a great touch to a rustic wedding. It can also work for any season. During the spring/summer season using a light colored cake flavor like lemon, vanilla, almond, etc. with fresh fruit and greenery adds the perfect touch. For a winter/fall wedding, having a darker colored cake like red velvet, chocolate or pumpkin with greenery and powdered sugar dusted over the cake is ideal. This is also a great option if the bride and groom like less icing and more cake because let me be honest, it is ALL about the bride and groom…it is their day! Check out how to make a naked cake with this tutorial.
The rosette cake is a trend I have seen both in wedding, anniversary and birthday cakes. For wedding cakes the rosettes add a romantic and elegant twist. Sticking with a white, ivory or very subtle pink icing is best to keep the romantic effect. Rosettes also add texture to the cake and doesn’t deem it as a traditional cake. These cakes are also pretty easy to make! Check out a full DIY tutorial here.
Having an assortment of decorated cupcakes at a wedding is becoming more and more popular for many reasons. For one, there is no messy cutting. Second, each guest gets to pick what cupcake flavor they want and lastly, you don’t have to purchase serving plates if you don’t want to! Many people place the assorted cupcakes on a cupcake “tree” and it is topped with a small decorated cake. This is for the bride and groom to do a cake cutting and serve each other a bite. It is also to save the cake for the one year anniversary. If you love this idea you can get inspiration here.
I actually was sent this exact picture to replicate for a couple’s wedding later this year. Textured cakes with a pop of glitter are becoming a trend and stepping far away from the traditional style cake. If you want an eye catcher, alternating every other tier with two different styles is your way to go! Also, big and modern gum paste flowers are also stepping up in the trend world to add a modern touch to wedding cakes.
